DESCRIPTION
The Navy Distinguished Service Medal recognizes exceptionally meritorious service to the unit, specifically recognizing high-level leadership, administration, and sustained performance of duties of great responsibility. This is the highest non-combat award in CSG-12, reserved for Command staff, dedicated Mission Makers (ZEUS team), and Senior Enlisted who demonstrate profound impact over an extended period. It is specifically intended for individuals whose sustained dedication ensures the successful operation, stability, and growth of Carrier Strike Group Twelve.
HISTORY
The Distinguished Service Medal was established by an Act of Congress in February 1919 to recognize exceptionally meritorious service in a duty of great responsibility. The Navy Distinguished Service Medal (DSM) is specific to the Department of the Navy. It is typically awarded to officers of high rank, such as Flag Officers and Command staff, for sustained non-combat leadership or highly successful administrative initiatives that significantly benefit the entire organization.
PREREQUISITES
Exceptional Meritorious Service
The performance of duties must be significantly above that expected of personnel holding comparable rank or responsibilities within the unit.
Sustained Leadership & Impact
Demonstrated sustained dedication and leadership over a long period (typically 12+ months) that resulted in quantifiable, positive change for the unit.
Great Responsibility
Performance of high-level administrative or command duties that directly affect the entire unit's function (e.g., maintaining the server, creating core campaigns, leading the ZEUS team).
Unanimous Command Recommendation
Requires a unanimous vote or recommendation from the Command Staff (O-4+) to ensure the merit of the service is recognized at the highest levels.
