Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal

DESCRIPTION

The Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (NMCAM) is awarded for meritorious service or achievement of a lesser degree than required for the Commendation Medal. This is the unit's entry-level medal, used primarily to recognize junior personnel (E-1 to E-4) or new members for a single act of heroism or a specific, short-term achievement (typically 3–6 months). The NMCAM is essential for encouraging new members and recognizing contributions that are clearly superior to the norm but do not meet the sustained performance requirement of a higher award.

HISTORY

The Navy Achievement Medal was established by the Secretary of the Navy in May 1961. It was created to fill the need for an official medal to recognize meritorious service and achievement by junior officers and enlisted personnel. It was renamed the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal in 1991. It ranks immediately below the Commendation Medal and is one of the most widely used awards for encouraging high standards of performance across the Navy and Marine Corps.

PREREQUISITES
