Global War on Terrorism Service Medal

DESCRIPTION

The Global War on Terrorism Service Medal (GWOT-SM) is awarded to personnel who have participated in supporting counter-terrorism operations, but who did not meet the deployment criteria for the GWOT Expeditionary Medal (GWOT-EM). This medal signifies service in support of anti-terrorism and operational readiness efforts, typically while serving in a non-hostile operating location. For CSG-12, this represents the vital administrative, training, or logistical support provided to deployed elements from a non-combat environment, recognizing that every role is critical to the fight.

HISTORY

The Global War on Terrorism Service Medal was established by Executive Order in March 2003. It is awarded to service members who support operations in the Global War on Terrorism, typically while serving in an approved duty station within the US or a safe overseas location. It ranks immediately below the GWOT-EM in precedence.

PREREQUISITES

Qualifying Support Service

The recipient must be actively serving in a support capacity (administrative, training, logistical) during a designated GWOT campaign period.

Non-Expeditionary

The service must be performed in an area that does not qualify for the GWOT-EM, meaning no direct, credible threat of hostile action was present.

Active Participation

The member must have actively supported the unit operation for the duration of the campaign or for a minimum of 30 continuous days.

CO Certification

Requires verification from the Reporting Officer confirming service dates and final approval from the Commanding Officer (O-6).
