Combat Action Ribbon

DESCRIPTION

The Combat Action Ribbon (CAR) is awarded to personnel who have satisfactorily performed in sustained combat during an engagement with an opposing force. The CAR is not a medal for heroism or achievement, but rather an indicator of personal sacrifice and experience. It is awarded to those who have been personally exposed to hostile fire or suffered a direct hostile act while actively participating in a ground or flight engagement. It is one of the most respected ribbons, as it immediately identifies the wearer as having direct combat experience.

HISTORY

The Combat Action Ribbon was established by the Secretary of the Navy in February 1969 and is specific to the Department of the Navy (Navy and Marine Corps). Its purpose is to provide a single award that recognizes all personnel, regardless of rank or job, who have met the standard for participation in combat. Because it is a ribbon and not a medal, it is placed in the order of precedence immediately following all personal decorations (medals) and immediately before unit awards.
